We have all heard the term content marketing, but what exactly is it and why is it important?

Content marketing is a strategic process involving the creation and distribution of engaging, relevant and educational content to your clients and prospects. Understanding the meaning of content marketing and successfully implementing a strategy are two different things. Here are three things to keep in mind when launching a content marketing strategy.

IDENTIFY YOUR KEY AUDIENCE

Knowing who you are writing for, is the first step to implementing a successful content marketing strategy. Tracking visitor behavior on Google Analytics, such as the pages that receive the most visits and posts with the highest engagement should be taken into consideration. Your organization’s content should answer a specific question or address a need your audience may not know they have, but will, once they have engaged with your content.

BE CONSISTENT

Publishing one relevant piece of content every now and then is not going to build the audience and following that you want and need. A consistent content calendar ensures that you are pushing out relevant and timely content that answers timely questions of your audience. Establish yourself as a thought leader and your audience will return time and time again for your content. Organizing your content in a calendar or matrix format as well as listing by date, topic and audience will help you determine where your gaps are, or what topic needs to be addressed. Ask your audience for feedback, inviting them to comment on a post or email with suggestions or questions.

DON'T WRITE TO SELL

Writing with the end goal of helping your audience answer a specific question is key to turning prospects into clients. As you establish a rhythm of relevant and timely content, your audience will return again and again to your blog, social media pages or website, as you are viewed as a trusted resource. Once trust has been gained with content, the prospect will trust that you can help them with their more complex business needs, whether it’s branding, content development, media strategy or social media planning.
